SPOTLIGHT ON Jonathan Blue, Chairman & Managing Director, Blue Equity

By Sharon Hirschowitz

Bringing sophisticated technology and self-sustaining infrastructure to a remote island destination is no mean feat. Jonathan Blue takes us through the exciting journey of creating an ultra-luxury, self-sustaining paradise resort in the jungle.

You have just opened the KanXuk Blue Maya Resort on the Sian Ka’an biosphere coastline, a UNESCO World Heritage site on the eastern coast of Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula. What are some of the challenges you faced opening a luxury resort in such a secluded location?

There were so many challenges and obstacles that we had to overcome to construct and complete KanXuk Blue Maya Resort.  Most importantly, we had to create a self-sustaining infrastructure for all of our utility, plumbing and power requirements.  It was imperative that we bring technology to the jungle for our guests so we designed and built special systems for satellite television and internet connectivity.  As we are the first resort in the biosphere it was critical that we do things properly to set the standard for any future development.  With much effort, we have succeeded in creating a luxury resort in the midst of a thriving, natural environment.  There was no disturbing of the local habitat which thrives amongst the property.

What are guests looking for when they choose your property? How have you crafted the experiences?

KanXuk Blue Maya Resort is a secluded and private resort exemplifying opulent accommodations and amenities in a paradisiacal tropical setting.  It is the ideal destination for the most discerning travelers who insist on exclusive and unique experiences.  KanXuk Blue Maya Resort is the perfect hideaway for those seeking anonymity or a wilderness experience with all of the modern-day conveniences.  Our concierge service customizes activities and programs for our guests, including spa and wellness treatments, private tours of Mayan ruins, wildlife and nature, boating and fishing excursions and water sports.

Can you walk us through your thought process when designing the F&B offerings?

The KanXuk Blue Maya Resort’s menu changes daily.   Our culinary staff is committed to creating both classic and contemporary European and Latin dishes with a vibrant touch of Mexican flavors and traditions.  The menu is driven by locally sourced and seasonal ingredients.  Guests selecting the all-inclusive rate are encouraged to work with our chef to create personalized menus for the entirety of their stay.  We are also known for our multi-leveled tequila tasting hosted by our on-premise mixologist.

How have you incorporated sustainability into the ethos of the resort?

One of the primary goals of KanXuk Blue Maya Resort is to be a self-sustaining property that leaves as little impact on the surrounding area as possible. Being the only luxury resort situated in the Sian Ka’an Reserve, this commitment to sustainability is key to every aspect of the property, from energy generation to water purification to the construction materials used to build each structure.

  • 48 solar panels and a wind turbine provide most of the energy, with a backup generator for cloudy days.
  • Chef’s nursery for growing fresh vegetables, fruits, herbs, and spices.
  • Natural underground cistern with fresh water, which is then filtered to ensure the highest purification standards for safe drinking, bathing, etc.
  • Biodigesters and plumbing recovery systems clean and recycle water before returning it back into the ecosystem.
  • Indigenous building materials, including wood and other natural elements from the property for the palapas, railings, thatching, and floors.
  • Handmade furniture sourced from regional artisans.
